Samiam/Angry Samoans

2 ans après, j'ai enfin retrouvé mon super-pote Jim à San Francisco, qui m'a présenté au reste de son nouveau groupe, Samiam: Sergie, Jason, Martin et Mark ! Je vais les voir répéter la veille de ce concert au mythique Gilman Street project, bon souvenir !
Les Gargoyles ouvrent le bal, pas top !
Samiam joue tous les titres de sa démo et de son futur 1er single devant une meute de teenagers déchainés, le groupe est pas encore super au point comparé à Social Unrest, l'ancien groupe de Jim, mais annonce des lendemains qui chantent ! Je vais avoir de quoi écrire un bouquin sur ces gugusses au fur et à mesure des années qui passent !
Trop content d'écouter live les tubes des cultissimes Angry Samoans, leurs 2 premiers LP's sont des méga -classiques du LA Hardcore, et ce groupe joue trop rarement live.J'enregistre le concert et discute avec Gregg Turner, le guitariste, d'une éventuelle tournée européenne.
Super soirée !

2 years after, i finally get to meeet my great friend Jim in San Francisco, who introduce me to the nutty ones of his new band, Samiam: Sergie, Jason, Martin & Mark! I catch them at their practice place the night before this show at the mythical Gilman Street project, great souvenir !
The Gargoyles open the show,so-so...
Samiam play all the songs off their 1st demo & their future 1st single in front of a crazy teen audience, the band's not really tied together yet compared to Social Unrest, Jimi's previous band, but will improve later in a drastic way ! I will get enough to write a book about these guys someday, after years of sillyness w/ them !
So happy to hear the cult songs of the Angry Samoans, their 1st two LP's are absolute LA Hardcore classics, & this band is so hard to catch live.I get to record the show & chat w/ Gregg Turner,their guitar player,about a possible Euro tour.

Là, l'Ibeam est en feu pour ces nouveaux héros locaux, mélange improbable entre les Red Hot et les Residents !Franchement excellent ! J'achète sur place leur 1er LP live,qui vient de sortir !Ce groupe va faire un sacré chemin par la suite !

Steel Pole Bathtub/Stickdog

Pour mon retour à San Francisco, 2 obscurs groupes du label de Jello Biafra, Alternative Tentacles.Stickdog est un groupe indus barré, le batteur tape comme un sourd sur un énorme ressort métallique, fun !SPBT est plus convenu, un peu dans la veine de Sonic Youth.Et vive le Kennel Club !

For my return to San Francisco,2 bands from Mr Biafra's label, AT.Stickdog has a crazy indus sound, the drummer is punching on a giant metallic spring, funny ! SPBT is more predictable but good, in the vein of Sonic Youth.I love the Kennel Club !

Jawbreaker

J'ai reçu 2 mois plus tôt la démo du nouveau groupe de mon pote Jim de Social Unrest: Samiam.Dans sa lettre, tonton Jim ne tarissait pas d'éloges sur un de leur groupe-frère: Jawbreaker.Je suis donc tout content d'aller voir les potes de mon pote jouer dans un bar miteux de Manhattan, le Lismar Lounge, avec Stisism en 1ere partie (bof !).Je m'attend à passer un moment cool, mais certainement pas à être secoué comme rarement je l'aurais été par un groupe inconnu: les compos de ce groupe me prennent directement aux tripes, atteignent mon cerveau et me tirent presque des larmes tellement c'est beau ! Le logo des Articles of Faith sur le cuir du bassiste m'avait mis un peu la puce à l'oreille, mais bon...
A part Hüsker Dü et les Moving Targets, aucun groupe n'avait réussi à mettre autant de passion et d'émotion derrière le mur du son que Jawbreaker dresse entre lui et les 30 chanceux qui sont là ce soir. Tous ces morceaux vont devenir ma bande son perso lors de la sortie de "Unfun", leur 1er LP, qq mois plus tard. En attendant, je taille la bavette avec Adam,le batteur, et Blake, le guitariste, à qui j'achète une copie de leur 1er EP (500 copies!) "Whack & Blite". Enorme souvenir de ce groupe aujourd'hui culte !
Le lendemain soir, pour fêter ça, je me dirige vers un autre bar miteux de Manhattan, le Beirut, pour en remettre une couche: 2ème show de Jawbreaker, pour être bien sûr d'avoir bien compris la baffe de la veille! Et non, j'étais ni saoûl, ni sourd, c'est toujours aussi bon et là, je peux chanter en choeur ! Le son est moins bon, il y a encore moins de monde, une deuxième soirée d'affilée mémorable!
Je vais recroiser Jawbreaker qq années plus tard....

2 months earlier, i received in my mailbox the first demo from my bud Jim of Social Unrest: it's his new band, Samiam.In his letter, uncle Jimmy was talking in awe about one of their brother band: Jawbreaker.So I'm all excited to check my friend's friends in some shitty bar in Manhattan, the Lismar Lounge.Stisism opens,so-so.I'm about to have a good time, am I thinking, but certainly don't expect to be so blown away by a new & then unknown band:
these guys songs get straight to my guts, then to my brain & almost make me cry since they're so emotional !The Articles of Faith logo on the bass player's jacket should have warned me !
Except for Hüsker Dü and the Moving Targets, no other band had then succeed before in putting so much passion & emotion behind the wall of sound Jawbreaker has built between the band and the lucky 30 who attend tonight .All the songs they play tonight will turn into the soundtrack of my life w/ the release of their "Unfun" 1st LP a few months later.I get to chat w/ Adam, the drummer, & Blake, singer/guit player, who I buy a copy from of their 1st
"Whack & Blite" EP (500 copies !).Great,great souvenir of this now cult band !
And to celebrate that, I'm heading the next day to Beirut bar,another shitty one, to catch another good one : another Jawbreaker show, to make sure i understood well the previous kick in the nuts ! No, I wasn't drunk or deaf, it's always as good & i can now sing along ! Sound is crappy, even less people, another great night !
I will get to meet these guys again some years later...

Mudhoney/Gwar

De retour à NYC où je suis batteur pour un spectacle de danse qui tourne au BAM de Brooklyn (y'avait Lou Reed qui jouait là qq temps avant!! ), je me fais tout Manhattan à pied pour faire la promo du 1er LP de Parkinson Square.Et je continue pendant ce concert génial, où je retrouve Kim & Thurston de Sonic Youth (que j'avais rencontré lors de leur 1ere tournée européenne à Lyon en 83), Don Flemming de Gumball et Jon Poneman de Sub-Pop, je me débarasse à nouveau de qq LP's!
The Fluid commence son set, pas mal, bien déjanté, ils viennent de sortir leur 2ème LP sur Sub-Pop.Ils feront plus tard un split 7" avec Nirvana.
Mudhoney est alors un groupe en pleine hype aux US comme en Europe, mais j'accroche pas trop, ça a un coté trop seventies pour moi.
Mais alors GWAR !! Je crois pas m'être autant marré à un concert!! Ces mecs sont fous, avec leurs déguisements style Warhammer, leurs sketchs gores et cul et leurs pastiches de poses métal! C'est violemment débile, le faux-sang gicle à 20 m et le public est mort de rire.Un vrai mélange entre Kiss et les premiers films de Peter Jackson! Le combat de catch dans le ring avec découverte d'une bière pendant le vidage de tripes du skinhead en carton pâte atteint les sommets !

Back to NYC, drumming for a Dance show at Brooklyn's BAM (Lou Reed played there last week !), I'm walking across Manhattan for Parkinson Square's 1st LP promotion ! And I keep upduring that great show where i run into Kim & Thurston from Sonic Youth (whom I had met during their 1st euro tour in Lyon in 83), Don Flemming of Gumball & Jon Poneman from the famous Sub-Pop label, i get to give away more LP's !
The Fluid hit the stage, not bad, a bit crazy, their 2nd LP just came out on Sub-Pop.They'll put out a split 7" w/ Nirvana later on.
Mudhoney is a hype band then in the US & Europe, but their 70's sound is not for me.
But GWAR !! Don't think i ever laughed so hard at a show before & since ! These guys are nuts in their Warhammer costumes, their gore'n'sex antics & their metal poses ! It's violently silly , fake blood is splashing around the hall & the 600 locals are laughing to death ! A good mix between Kiss & Peter Jackson's first gore movies ! The wrestling battle w/ the skinhead puppet losing his guts & finding a beer get me to the top !

Elvis Hitler/the Neighbourhoods

Ha j'aurais finalement vu un concert au mythique CBGB, jamais eu de bol avec la prog de ce trou à rat ! Soirée rock/punk de 2 groupes de seconde division qui envoient quand même bien le bois devant 20 personnes !
Well, finally get to see a show at the classic CBGB, never was lucky w/ that shithole booking ! Rock/punk night w/ 2 lesser bands that rock anyway in front of 20 !

Content de revoir ce bon vieux Jean-Jacques Burne au Truck, bassiste frenchy mythiques des Stranglers, taper des reprises psyché avec son potes John Ellis des Vibrators. Anecdotique, mais sympa...

Festival Hardcore

Super affiche sur 2 jours, avec Gorilla Biscuits et les Doughboys le 1er soir, les Hard-Ons le lendemain !
Gorilla Biscuits: ha ces bons gros bébés joufflus nourris au beurre de cacahouètes ! HC efficace, mais bien daté, pourquoi ces types sont-ils aujourd'hui considérés comme des précurseurs,mystères !
Doughboys: putain la baffe ! Excellent pop-punk chanté par les 4 membres de ce qui deviendra un de mes groupes fétiches une fois leur discographie achetée !
Les Hard-ons ont à peine le temps de brancher les amplis et d'envoyer la purée pendant 15 minutes que la salle doit fermer ! Paris, c'est vraiment de la merde pour les concerts !

Great line-up for this 2 days festival: Gorilla Biscuits and the Doughboys the 1st day, the Hard-Ons the next days !
Gorilla Biscuits: well-fed w/ peanut butter american babies ! Dated HC, why are these guys considered today as a classic & original band remains a mystery to me !
Doughboys: Classy & awesome !Great pop-punk tunes sung by all 4 members of what will become one of my fave bands once i get all of their records !
The Hard-ons only get to play for 15 minutes before the club closes ! Paris suck so much for shows !

Young Gods

On se fait la première partie de ce groupe indus-metal suisse au Glob de Lyon avec Parkinson Square, intéressant line-up (1 chanteur, 1 batteur et 1 mec aux machines) et les mecs sont cools, même si leur musique est pas trop mon truc !
Parkinson Square opens for this Swiss indus-metal band at Lyon's Glob.Good line-up (1 singer,1 drummer, 1 sampler guy) & these guys are cool, even if the music's not my thing.

Treponem Pal

J'organise avec le Transbordeur le 1er concert en dehors de Paris d'un groupe de potes qui va bientôt faire parler de lui avec la sortie de son 1er LP. Les indus-metalleux de Treponem sont pas là pour faire rire, concert puissant et rageur. Parkinson joue à la maison devant 300 locaux, bon concert, sauf que mon maquillage de Eugène Kabongo (avant centre Zaïrois de l'OL !) coule et me pique les yeux pendant que je joue !

Même si le lieu est moins cool que pour leur premier concert au West Side de Lyon, ces mecs sont excellents et précurseurs d'un style mixant Country et Punk. Leurs 2 premiers LPs déchirent. Ils mettent le feu sur scène!

Even if that place is not as good as where they did their 1st show in Lyon (at the West Side), these guys are great onstage & create a then-original mix of Country music & Punk.Their first 2 LPs rule.They set the house on fire!

Living Color

J'ai acheté le 1er LP de ce groupe d'Afros jojos l'année d'avant à Londres et suis plutot content d'aller les voir live...mai c'est d'un chiant! Tellement technique qu'on comprend rien aux morceaux, on dirait qu'ils se plantent! Même leur reprise des Bad Brains est naze !

I bought these Afro guys' 1st LP a year earlier in London & felt quite pleased to check them live....it's boring as hell! So technical it seems they fuck up their songs! Even their Bad Brains cover suck!

Pere Ubu

Là, c'est une autre histoire! Groupe culte dont j'ai écouté en boucle les 3 premiers LP, et je fais enfin connaissance avec un des membres du groupe qui est un lointain "cousin" américain! Ambiance super cool avant, pendant et après le concert. David Thomas, le chanteur est un performer hors-pair.
Le lendemain,lors d'une visite du "cousin" à la maison, cousin Tony m'apprend qu'il accompagne également Bob Mould de Hüsker Dü, un de mes dieux vivants, arrgh !

Now that's another story! Cult band that I played the first 3 LP's over & over, & I finally get to meet one of the band members who's a faraway american "cousin"! Great atmosphere before, during & after the show.David Thomas is one monster of a performer.
The next day, during the cuz visit at my house, cousin Tony tells me he's now also playing for Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü, one of my living god, arrgh!

700 personnes pour un groupe US que je connais pas ?! J'ai raté qq chose, suis trop bourrin! Tout le monde à l'air de trouver ce groupe génial, leur set ne me fait ni chaud ni froid...désolé !

Fin Mai 89, je croise 3 canadiens perdus dans Lyon: ce sont les membres de Nomeansno, dont le 1er LP me plaisait bien! Je leur fais une visite guidée de la ville toute la journée, ces mecs sont cools, ils m'invitent le surlendemain à leur concert parisien.Un petit coup de TGV pour me prendre une de ces baffes: putain le niveau musical de ces mecs, terrible! Concert exceptionnel! Présence scénique impresionnante, tous les tubes de "Small parts", leur nouvel LP, y passent. Super souvenir!

Meet 3 lost Canucks lost in Lyon at the end of May 89: hey,it's the Nomeansno guys !I loved their 1st LP, so i'm doing them a visit of my hometown all day, these guys are super-cool, they invite me to their show in paris 2 days later.Once there, they kick my butt big time: these guys are awesome musicians for sure ! Gigantic show, what a stage presence, all the hits from "Small Parts" ! What a souvenir !

Flitox/Phobia/Parkinson Square

Comment ai-je pu oublier celui-là ?! J'organise avec les requins du Truck le 1er festival HC de groupe français sur Lyon: 650 personnes se déplacent, hallucinant ! A 35 Francs la place, ça fait 20 000 Francs, sans compter le bar...Ces enflures nous donnent 1 000 francs pour les 3 groupes (dont Flitox qui vient de Paris) et sont assez salauds pour nous enlever encore 300 francs pour un micro abîmé !! Bon concert, bonne ambiance, et j'apprend beaucoup ce soir-là...

How can i forget this one ?! I book this show w/ the Truck lousy businesssmen, the 1st ever in Lyon w/ only French HC bands : 650 show up for 6$, that goes for 4 000 $ plus the booze they sell...those scumbags give us 150 $ for 3 bands (Flitox cam all the way from Paris) & even scam an extra 50 $ for a damaged mic !! Good show, good audience & I learn a lot that night...

Killing Joke

Putain, le retour! Ce soir, tout Lyon s'est précipité voir cette merde de Bérurier Noir et rate le retour de la Joke, qui a laissé de coté la soupe commerciale dans laquelle elle était tombée pour retrouver son coté caterpillar: les vieux tubes, mais surtout des nouveaux tubes qui DECHIRENT GRAVE ! C'est puissant, agressif et glauque, leur nouveau batteur Martin Atkins est terrible! Le terrifiant "Extremities" va sortir qq mois plus tard,en attendant, ces nouveaux morceaux nous donnent la chair de poule, à mes potes Boulon, Jésus et moi!

Tonight, everyone in Lyon went to see that Berurier Noir crap band & misses the fucking Joke.Gone is the commercial stuff, back is the huge Caterpillar sound: old hits, but especially the new songs that TOTALLY DESTROY! Heavy, aggressive & dark stufff,their new drummer Martin Atkins is awesome! The terrifying "Extremities" will come out shortly after, but tonight, these songs give us the creeps, me & my pals Boulon & Jesus!

Suis sur Montpellier pour enregistrer le 1er LP de Parkinson Square, on fait une pause pour aller voir ce groupe local avec d'ex OTH massacrer une reprise des Vandals en Français! No comment!

Un autre grand nom de l'alternatif Français d'alors...mais eux au moins sont drôles et se prennent pas au sérieux! Ha la batterie avec une valise et des balais de chiottes....Je me fends la gueule pendant plus d'une heure, excellent souvenir!

Le Hardcore émerge petit à petit en France, surtout à Paris pour le moment.
Déception avec ce concert, trop métal pour moi, même si les qq morceaux de leur 1er LP
me rappellent de bons souvenirs.

HC is finally paving its way in France, especially in Paris for the moment.
So-so show, too metal for me, even if the few tunes they play off their 1st LP remind me some good moments.

Les Thugs

Le 1er concert de notre nouveau groupe de hardcore, Parkinson Square, se passe dans un local anar sur les pentes de la Croix-Rousse à Lyon, en 1ere partie des Thugs, y’a pire pour commencer ! Leur mélange de pop/punk/HC est excellent, j’aurais l’occasion de recroiser par la suite ces adorables Angevins à de multiples reprises !

First show for our new HC band, Parkinson Square, opening for les Thugs in a anarchist squat on the upper-part of Lyon, there are worse premieres!
Their mix of pop/punk/HC is excellent, I’ll get to meet w/ these lovable guys several times later on!

Midnight Oil

Complet, des turcs à moustaches font du marché noir avec des kids de 14 ans, je trouve une place au prix normal, le concert ne valait même pas ça ! Chiant au bout de 3 morceaux…

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Et oui, encore eux! Après avoir vu leur 1er concert européen au Dingwalls de Londres 3 ans plus tôt, je pouvais pas manquer leur 1ere date francaise !
C’est la 5ème fois que je les vois, je préviens donc mes voisins de la fosse de ce qu’ils vont se prendre dans la gueule !
Je fais la connaissance de Stef, bassiste de Flitox et futur Treponem Pal, qui est encore aujourd’hui un super-pote.
Toujours aussi cool de voir ce groupe dans une petite salle, 2 ou 300 personnes hallucinent devant ce groupe précurseur.
Au rappel, je réclame « we got the neutron bomb », le chanteur me répond « ho really ?! », fun !
Après le show, je discute avec le soundman des Red Hot, Chris Grayson, sympa…mais le pauvre finira assassiné pour de sombres histoires de came qq années plus tard !

Yes,them again ! After seeing their 1st ever euro date at London’s Dingwalls 3 years earlier, I couldn’t miss their 1st French date!
As it’s the 5th time I see them, I’m telling my pit buddies about the kick in the nuts they’re about to get!
I meet Stef, Flitox’s bassman & future Treponem Pal, who’s remained my close buddy to this day.
Always great to see this band in a small club, 2 or 300 people are hallucinating in front of this ahead-of-its-time combo.
For the encore, I’m shouting “we got the neutron bomb”, the singer goes “ho,really?”, funny!
After the show, I get to chat w/ their sound guy, Chris Grayson, cool dude, but the poor guy will end slaughtered on some shitty dope deal years later!

J’ai réussi à rentrer à ce concert secret et complet donné dans un sous-sol lugubre parisien, Novembre 87.300 fans de hiphop (que des mecs !) sont là, pas ma scène, mais pas mal d’énergie pour un mouvement encore underground à cette époque.Pas mon truc musicalement…

Was able to get inside the gloomy Parisian club for that secret & sold-out show, november 87.
300 hip-hop fans around (mostly guys!), not my scene but lots of energy for what was still an underground movement at the time.Not my thing musically…

Peter Murphy of Bauhaus

Encore la Loco à Paris, me fais le concert de l'ex chanteur des mythiques Bauhaus 2 soirs de suite, plutôt cool, surtout la reprise du "the light pours out of me" de Magazine, un de mes groupes fétiches !

Once again, la Loco in Paris for the ex singer of the mythical Bauhaus, 2 nights in a row, cool shows, especially for his cover of "the light pours out of me" from one of my fave band ever, Magazine !

Meat Puppets

Me tape mon premier boulot à Paris à 22 ans, me fait les nuits à la Locomotiv et surprise, y croise les Meat Puppets et leur country-punk ! Leur 1er LP sur SST était vraiment déjanté, le concert est pas mal, le trio joue devant 30 pelés, ça me rappelle mes vacances aux US !
Qui aurait prédit que plus tard, ces mecs joueraient leurs propres morceaux sur MTV avec Nirvana?!

1st job in Paris at 22, going out to la Locomotive at nights, & surprize, I’m catching the Meat Puppets & their country-punk there! Their 1st LP on SST was weird, the show’s not bad, only 30 people there, reminds me of my US vacation!
Who could have bet then that these guys would later be on MTV, playing their own songs w/ Nirvana?

Scream club

5 groupes de mauvais hard rock avec coupes de cheveux-caniches à se taper pour profiter du Scream club de LA, mais putain……y’a des bimbos californiennes de partout, y’en a même une qui nous parle de « ménage a trois » en francais dans le texte ! On pète un plomb avec le moz..et pas grâce à la musique !

Moz, fan de rap, m’entraine dans un petit club, où l’on papote avec un black qui porte..un maillot de l’OGC Nice ! En compagnie de 30 locaux, on va écouter un petit jeune rappeur dont le 1er LP vient de sortir..Ice T !!! Pas ma tasse de thé, mais quand on pense à ce qu’est devenu ce type depuis…il passe même sur TF1 !

Moz,as a true hip-hop fan, drives me in that small club where we chat w/ that black guy, who wears a French football team
shirt !
W/ the 30 locals, we check a young artist who just put out his 1st LP…Ice T!!! Not my cup of tea, but it’s fun to think about what this guy has become since…even featured on national French TV !!

Lovedogs/Holy sisters of the Gagadada

Avec un nom pareil qui nous amusait bien (Moz a meme acheté le disque !), on était obligé d’aller les écouter au légendaire Whisky-a-gogo de LA…pas grand souvenir de ces groupes de filles, en dehors de leurs belles plastiques !

W/ such a funny & amusing name (Moz even bought their LP), we had to check them at the legendary Whisky-a-gogo in LA…not much to remember from these all-girl bands, apart from their nice plastique!

Wild Child

En route pour le mythique Roxy Club de LA voir ce qui s'y passe: misère,ce soir,un groupe “tribute” de clones des Doors se produit devant un parterre de babas nostalgiques ! C’est d’un glauque de voir ces sosies imiter le moindre geste scénique de ce groupe légendaire.
Ils sont fous ces Ricains !
